Glass Window Types

  • Tinted- Tinted or colored glass windows provide protection against the harmful UV rays of the sun by keeping away direct sunlight from the room. A coloured glass window also makes for good aesthetics and provides complete privacy. Tinted windows are ideal for houses located in regions with extreme heat conditions. There are many types of tinted glass windows such as black glass windows, blue glass windows, bronze glass windows, grey glass windows, etc.
  • Tempered- Tempered glass has 4-5 times more strength than a conventional glass. It is resistant against impacts and tends to shatter into small pieces which do not have sharp edges. Thus, tempered glass windows provide perfect protection to the inhabitants against injuries.
  • Laminated- Laminated glass is made by fusing two or more sheets of glass around a layer of polyvinyl butyral. The fusion is done by a process using high heat and pressure .The resulting glass is extremely strong. Laminated glass does not break into shards on impact and is also resistant against explosion. Thus, the best degree of security is the defining feature of laminated glass windows. They are commonly installed in high-security houses and offices.
  • Insulated- Insulated glass windows consist of two or more panes of glass which are sealed with each other but separated by a space filled with dry air or argon gas. Energy efficiency is the principal feature of insulated glass windows. Insulated glass windows keep the energy costs down by keeping the house warm during cold winters and cool during hot summers.
  • Obscured- Obscured glass allows light to filter through but is not a clear glass because of designs or patterns which impart a degree of opacity. Obscured glasses are used to make decorative glass windows for homes and offices. For example, stained glass windows have colourful tints which are infused on the surface through a process known as baking. They are commonly found in Churches. Another example of obscure glass windows are etched glass windows. Etched glass window has a design or art on its surface which has been etched using acidic or other abrasive substance. The design makes the glass window translucent.
  • Frosted- Frosted glass is created by chemically treating a glass surface using sandblasting technique. Frosted glass windows have unique designs and patterns which makes them opaque. Thus, they can also be called opaque glass windows. They are commonly used in bathrooms and other rooms requiring privacy.
  • Smart glass- Smart glass can turn opaque, translucent or transparent when electric voltage, heat or light is applied across it. Thus, smart glass windows can be turned opaque during bright sunny days, transparent to let in more sunlight during winters and translucent to allow an optimum amount of sunlight to enter the room. All this can be done by a device which uses electrochromic, thermochromic, photochromic or some other smart glass technology.
  • Plate glass- Plate glass is made by rolling molten glass to get a flat shape followed by polishing it. This technique makes the glass more strong and thick. This is the reason why plate glass windows are commonly used as large store windows.
  • Beveled glass- Beveled glass is usually a 1/4" thick float glass which has angled cuts around its perimeter. The beveled glass windows refract light in the manner of prisms to give a rainbow effect. They make for very elegant windows.

On the Basis of Design

  • Bay Windows- Bay windows enable light to enter the house at different angles. They have large sills where plants can be kept. Suitable for kitchens and family rooms.
  • Picture Windows- Picture windows are large windows which do not open. Picture windows provide a wide outside view and allow large amount of sunlight into the room.
  • Double Hung Windows- Double hung windows have movable upper and lower sash. Double hung windows provide good ventilation.
  • Awning Windows- Awning windows open out from the top of the sash. They are operated by cranks. Awning windows are commonly used with picture windows or above doors.
